Accountants for freelancers and contractors
We have worked with freelancers and contractors online for more than ten years. You get proactive accounting and tax advice, delivered on time and structured tax efficiently for how you actually work.
AccountsHelp provides limited company accounting for freelancers and contractors on a fixed monthly fee, covering annual accounts, corporation tax, VAT, payroll and the director personal tax return, for contractors working anywhere in the United Kingdom.
- IT, engineering and management contractors working through a limited company
- Freelancers who have outgrown sole trader status
- Contractors moving off an umbrella company
- Anyone who needs a straight answer on off-payroll working rules
Contracting has its own questions. How much to take as salary against dividends, whether the Flat Rate Scheme still helps, what an off-payroll determination means for your take-home. We answer those before they cost you money rather than after.
- A tax efficient salary and dividend structure reviewed each year
- Company and personal filings handled together, not in isolation
- Unlimited access when a client throws a contract question at you

Common questions
How much does a contractor accountant cost?
Our Essential contractor package is £70 per month. That covers the annual accounts, corporation tax return, VAT, Companies House filing, payroll for one and your personal tax return, all in one fixed fee with no year-end extra.
Am I better off with a limited company or an umbrella company?
A limited company usually leaves you better off where your engagements fall outside the off-payroll working rules, because you control the mix of salary and dividends. An umbrella is simpler and can make more sense for short assignments or where engagements are consistently inside the rules. We will compare both on your actual contract rate.
What are the off-payroll working rules and how do they affect me?
The off-payroll working rules decide whether an engagement should be taxed like employment. For public sector clients and medium or large private sector clients, the client makes that determination and the fee payer operates PAYE where an engagement is inside. Where the client is a small private company, the responsibility sits with your company. The determination changes your take-home materially, so we review each contract with you.
What expenses can a contractor claim?
Costs incurred wholly and exclusively for the business, which typically includes business travel and subsistence, professional subscriptions, equipment and software, business insurance, accountancy fees, and a proportion of home working costs. Travel to a client site can be restricted where it counts as an ordinary commute, and the rules differ where an engagement is inside the off-payroll rules.
Should I register for the VAT Flat Rate Scheme?
It depends on how much VAT you incur on purchases. Many contractors fall within the limited cost business rules, which apply a higher flat rate and remove most of the benefit. We work out both positions on your actual figures before recommending one.
Can you take over an existing contractor company?
Yes. We handle the professional clearance with your current accountant, take over the filing calendar and, as an introductory offer, bring your accounting and tax affairs up to date free of charge.
